FUTURE OF THE PACIFIC.
INFLUENCE OF THE PANAMA ■ CANAL.
AUSTRALIA'S ISOLATION OVER
[PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
SYDNEY, April 23. The morning papers, commenting on Mt Deakin's references at the Pilgrim's banquet to the position in the Pacific, urge tlib necessity of Austra? lia's learning to face the altered circumstances which the presence' and ac- > tivity of foreign nations have created. The Daily Telegraph, adds: " When the Panama Canal is opened, and the hustle for trade' receives a powerful* impetus, derived from the influx of a huge volume of new shipping to the Pacific, Australia can hardly fail to feel the influence of her, neighbours more acutely than at present. Restrictionist and exclusionist tactics will no longer avail Australians; tne period of isolation will be over."
