"I visited Sotheby's on Tuesday," says a correspondent of a Home paper, "and examined some of the curious letters and relics relating to the Wesley family which were offered for sale. The cream satin robe in which John Wesley was christened lay in a glass case beside two muslin caps and three tiny shirts. The short satin sleeves, turned back with gauntlet-shaped cuffs, were bound round the tops with silk ribbon in the same way as the armholes, arid the edges were sewn togther so that no thick seam could chafe the bau-'s skin. According to a note in the catalogue, these interesting relics were given by Wesley to Miss Nancy Bolton, whose brother's house at Witney, Oxfordshire, was one of his much-loved haunts. Some of Wesley's letters to Miss Bolton were also for sale. Weekenders and others who are glad of an excuse to vary their abode as often as possible will agree with the advice given by Wesley in a case of illness:— "Change of air is likely to do you more good than an hundred Medicines. Come away, come away."
The art of deception' in the dbg trade can be carried to considerable lengths, as is proved by an amusing incident which occurred in London recently. A lady, accompanied by a little pet dog which she carried in'her arms, visited her dressmaker. While there another customer arrived with a fox terrier. The latter became extremely excited, and the pet dog showed unmistakable signs of alarm. At^ last the little one jumped from the lady's lap to the ground . and was promptly seized by the terrier, who snook it vigorously till the skin came off, revealing a rat. Its owner recovered without demur the price given fo'.- it on application to the vendors, who were probably pleased to get off so lightly.
