PICTON.

(Own Correspondent.)

Two earthquakes were felt here yesterday morning within an hour of each other. The weather has been very close and oppressive, and oldNjppeather prophets were predicting earthquakes. The funeral of Mrs Levi Love took place on Sunday. A large tangi was held at Waikawa, but no drink was allowed at the Pa. Three oil-launches conveyed the coffin and mourners to Antoia Island in Tory Channel, where they were joined by many residents of the Sounds, all arriving in oil-launches, and an impressive ceremony was held on the ancient burial ground of the Love family. A dog poisoner is at work, and several valuable dogs have been destroyed in consequence of eating tempting little tit-bits cunningly left on the roadside, and some even on doorsteps. Other pets were only just saved by the prompt measures taken by their owners. The Rev. Mr Rainier has kindly offered to. perform the Rev. J. U. Spence's duties in Picton for a few weeks till the anxiety on account of Mrs Spence's health has abated. Mrs (Colonel) Sommerville is in Picton on a visit to her mother,, Mrs Jones.
