SLAUGHTERMEN'S ASSISTANTS REFUSE TO WORK.

[press association.] TIMARU, Feb. 16. A strike has occurred at the Canterbury Meat Company's works at Pareora, near Timaru. The strike is not of slaughtermen, but their assistants, jbhe hands employed in handling offal. These men de«¥anded rate and a-half for all work they did after eight hours per day, and this demand the company refused. Yesterday morning the butchers wen to work, but could not proceed owing to their assistants being absent. The award under which the men worked makes no mention of overtime.
