OMAKA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Omaka Road Board was held yesterday afternoon. There were present : Messrs G. Houldsworth (Chairman), J. Bary, A. Mackay. Mr Bary and the Chairman were appointed to represent the Board at the commission of enquiry in reference to the responsibility for erecting the Omaka bridge and maintaining it and Litchfield's and Conolly's ana Fairhall bridges. The Wa-irau Road Board wrote suggesting that a Commission be applied for with a view of compelling the Blenheim Borough. Council to contribute towards the maintenance of the Wairau and Opawa fords at Renwick. Wednesday was formally appointed as the half-holiday for the ensuing year, by special meeting.

HEAVY HAULAGE REGULATION

Mr Chas. Nees wrote suggesting that the Board should provide name and number plates for attachment to waggons.—After discussion it ivas agreed that, owing to the expense, the Board could net provide free plates, but that the name and number must be put on at the owner's expense. On the motion of Mr Bary, seconded by Mr McKay, it was resolved that all waggon-owners using the Board's roads after January 30th without license be sued; and that ,in accordance with by-law No. 10, the Board insists on the regulation providing for numbers and names being attached to vehicles being carried out. An irregular discussion on the principle of taxing heavy traffic took place, all present being against it. However, as some were being charged fees, all should be treated alike. Mr Mackay was in favour of the toll-gate.

INSPECTOR'S REPORT

Tife Inspector (Mr Combes) reported that a 4ft. fcothpath at Springlands from Mr Saul's corner to the Rev. W. O. Robb's would cost £28.— Deferred till next meeting, at the request of Mr Jackson, who was absent. On the motion of Mr Bary, the Inspector was instructed to report- to next meeting on the necessity of repairs to this footpath or owerwise. The Inspector reported that birch planks had had to be removed in Batty's bridge, whereas bluegum stringers put in at the same time were quite good.

Mr Mapp was granted £8 worth of timber in addition to three stringers, towards the erection of a bridge over the Co-operative Drain, he to find the labour.

The Inspector was instructed to retain gravelling contract money until big stones on Old Renwick Road have been cracked.

Mr Bary referred to the dangerous state of Graham's --i:ch. The growth of mint was obscuring the ditch, and he was afraid an accident would occur there.—lt was decided that the mint be mown down.

On the motion of Mr Bary. it was an instruction to the Inspector to place extra longitudinal planks upon the three bridges on the Middle Renwick Road.

The action of Mr Bary in appointing Miss Maxwell as poundkeeper as a substitute for Mr Dawes was approved.

Accounts amounting to £248 15s 9d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
