SPRINGS A LEAK IN A HEAVY SEA.
BAD WEATHER OFF THE COAST. [press association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. The Elverland was bound for Auckland with 574 tons of coal for Mr J. Craig. It was reported that the vessel was leaking in a heavy sea and gale. There was no hope of keeping the vessel afloat, so the lifeboats were launched, and the crew of twelve in two boats made the land safely. The captain's boat reached Pukenui, a small township in the Far North. Extremely bad weather has lately been prevalent off the northern end of New Zealand, and sailing vessels particularly have had rough passages.. The captain of the Defiance, wjiich arrived this morning, left Newcastle. the day after the Elverland on December 20. The Defiance was within 250 miles of the Three Kings when she encountered a heavy gale from the southeast. The weather became much worse, the wind veering to E.S.E. with a heavy sea and thick weather. The captain of the Defiance states that he only saw the sun once between December 27 and January 2.
