ADULTERATED BOOTS.
There is nothing like leather, but many things are made to do duty for it. The Drapers' Record contains the following story:—"A retailer recently purchased a quantity of ladies' glace kid Oxford shoes. When the samples .were submitted to him he understood that the goods were all leather, and this impression was confirmed when the shoes were delivered, for the bottoms were stamped 'Solid leather sole.' The retailer, consequently, handed them out to his customers with confidence. But this confidence was rudely shaken when a lady returned with a pair, which she had worn for a fortnight, and pointed out that the bottoms contained paper. The retailer resoled the shoes free of charge, and then proceeded to examine the rest of the consignment he had in stock unsold. The inquest demonstrated what a queer assortment of things may hide unseen behind a 'solid leather sole' stamp. The shoe had a paper sock, a very light split inner sole, heavily backed with cardboard, and filling consisting of a piece of" cardboard cut from a shoe box."
