At the Newcastle conference, the owners submitted proposals under which they are prepared to abolish the dog-watch in all pits excepting East Greta, Stanford and Merthyr, where special conditions obtain, and also to advance the hewing rate by fourpence, which would carry an advance in the price of coal to ten shillings per ton from the commencement of next year.

After a long and amicable discussion the conference adjourned until Tiies-^ day morning. The mass, meeting of men called for to-morrow has been adjourned till Thursday. Meanwhile work in the Newcastle pits continues.
