MOST RIGID INSPECTION .IN THE WORLD. COST OF INSPECTION AND GRADING. BEST MEATS ONLY SENT HOME. . ■■..■•!•'.■:._■.■-■'- ' [PRESS ASSOCIATION.]' • ' (Received June 8, 1.27 a;m.)- • . MELBOURNE, June 7. With reference to the War. Office decision regarding colonial tinned meat, Mr Seddon says that there ought now to' he an opportunity for: New Zealand to bring under the notice of the British Government and British consumers the advantage of having colonial meat frozen, chilled or tinned. Mr Seddon communicated with the British Government through the Governor and with Mr Reeves. He states that there is no place in the world where the same rigid inspection of slaughtering obtains as in New Zealand. Every abattoir is under Government inspection, and if there is the slightest sign of .taint' or disease the meat is condemned. Inspection and grading costs New Zealand £20,000 a year. The same care is exercised in regard to tinned meats; not only that, but the best meats only are sent Home. One of the complaints in New Zealand is of over-weight, and poor meat is not allowed to be exported.
