IS HECTOR MACDONALD DEAD ?

One of the most astounding stories ever yet heard, even in the realms of romance, has been sent to the Military Mail by a Canadian officer, who says he heard it in Japan. He writes : " The story goes that Major-General Sir Hector Macdonakl was approached by the Japanese authorities some years ago to join them, and that he came home to consult Lord Roberts and get permission to accept the invitation. But Lord Eoberts refused to give his consent, and Sir Hector Macdonald thereupon took his own course. He disappeared by pretending to commit suicide in Paris, reappearing as General Kuroki in Japan. In support of this theory it may bo mentioned that a certain newspaper in London offered a large reward —£1000, I think—to anyone who could prove that he had seen Sir Hector Macdonald's body. It may be remeinbt>red too that at one moment, when the war in Japan was supposed to be nearing the end, it was announced that General Kuroki was dead, but he again reappeared when his services were needed, and since the war concluded nothing has been heard of him, and he has received no public recognition of his great services during the campaign."
