FORGED CHEQUE FOR £10,000.
SUCCESSFUL FRAUD ON BRITISH
BANK
LONDON, March 31. A forged cheque for £10,000 has been cashed successfully at the San Paulo branch of the British Bank of South America.
The story of the fraud was told by Mr C. Carrington, who presided over the general meeting of the bank at its offices in Moorgate Street yesterday. The cheque was presented and cashed in January, and the forgery was discovered by the manager on the same day.
In spite, however, of the most searching investigation by him and by the police, it was not until the other day that the police cabled to the directors that they had collected sufficient evidence to justify an arrest. Warrants have been issued for the apprehension of two persons, but they are in hiding, and so far the warrants remain unexecuted.
Two clerks have been dismissed, who, the directors were convinced, had boon guilty of great neglect, to .say the least of it.
Air Carrington said that he feared the £10,000 was lost irrevocably.
