FIRE AT SEA.

A BARQUE DESTROYED

LOSS OF A VALUABLE CARGO

WELLINGTON, May 19. Mr G. 11. Scales, wool broker and shipping agent, received a cable from London this morning from his agents there intimating that the barque Pitcairn Island, which left here, for London on March 19, had been totally destroyed by fire at sea. No particulars were given, but it is surmised that the crew are safe.

The vessel loaded at Duncdin and Wellington, and had about 5600 bales of wool aboard, besides a quantity of tow. The cargo was valued at about £115,000, whfch is covered by insurance, most of the local offices being affected.

Capt. Fletcher was in command
