ADDRESS BY THE FEDERAL PREMIER.
AUSTRALIA FOR THE AUSTRA-
LIANS
[press association.] (Received May 19, 12.4 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 18
Mr Deakin addressed a large meeting itb the Town Hall, elaborating his policy ol' Australia for the Australians. Replying to criticisms that industrial legislation' should come first, Mr Deakin said this was impossible. The power to legislate industrially lay with the States, not tho ComnWhwealth. Protection must come first. This would net prevent their seeking a closer union with the Mother Country. At present there Mas not much prospect of any arrangement with the Mother Country, but ho was in communication with South Africa, and Canada was turning towards Australia. Although Mr Seddon had said there was not much prospect of falling into lino with Australia, the matter would be looked into in a few days.
