LATE LOCALS.
Tho census givp:s the Borough of Eltham a population oi 1328, showing :jd increase of 310 .since the "district was proclaimed a borough nearly live years ago.
in yesterday's report of the Land Hoard mooting it was statod that the hut on the Picnic Reserve at Goose Bay, Kaikoura, belonged to the County Council, it really belongs to the Roads Department.
Mr S. Tapp, who accompanied Mill. F. Goultor as representatives of the ■Laud and Railway League on a visit of inspection to the Seddon railway Avorks recently, informs us that there are at present 84 men employed. Tho foreman of tho works complained of the difficulty of securing haulage power tr, transport from tho Awatero. River the gravel necessary lor the concrete culverts. Until these culverts arc completed, no nioro than 100 men can be employed; so the members of the League consider it unnecessary at the present juncture, especially as some flaxmills in the district will be closing clown in a few days and providing ;
supply of labour, to take steps, as advised by tho Under-Secretary for Public Works in his last memo, to-1 the League, to get more men. Once the concrete culverts wore constructed, 150 men could be put on. The most of the work at the present time is being done a"t the Blind River end of the excavations.
