POSALS
A report was received from the Chairman and medical officer on the Premier's nursing proposals., ".hey strongly recommended the Board to adopt the proposals if it could see its way to increase the nurses' accommodation by setting up extra beds, lho Chairman said they looked at the nurses' quarters, and thought thai another 1-09111, providing adequate accommodation, could be built for £100 or £120. . A further circular was received from Mr Seddon. It contained replies to various questions raised by the Boards with regard to the details of Ins scheme. The probationer nurses would be appointed by the Government and be in attendance at the Hospital for three years, until tho training enabled them to register under the Nurses Registration Act. Local candidates on the Board's list of applicants may be chosen and recommended to the Government for appointment. They would be amenable to the hospital discipline and may be appointed permanently at the end of three years. The Board may veto the Government appointments and dispense with a propationer's services if they are proved unsuitable. The Board would have to. send quarterly reports of the progress of the nurses. The allowances would be: £25 for maintenance, £25 for salary, and £3 for probationers' uniforms on receipt of the quarterly ..report. Should this scheme prove unworkable, the Board may revert to the scheme formerly in use on communicating with the Government. Any new accommodation required must be provided by the Board. The Chairman thought the Premier's scheme a good one, and. the Board should support it. As; far as he could hear, there had been a great difficulty in securing trained nurses; and the present plan would meet a real want. Mr Penny moved that the Board approve of -the Premier's scheme of Government nurses, and expresses, .its willingness to take in four probationers as soon as the Board can pr.qVide accommodation. —Carried. ~.., On the motion of Mr James Bell, it was resolved that the Chairman report at next meeting .as to cost^bf additional accommodation. ..■?;..
