MR DOUGLAS PERRETT'S PICTURES.

In the auction rooms of Messrs Grirhths and Son is displayed a highly interesting collection of oils arid pastels by Mr J. Douglas Perrott, an artist whose work is widely known not only in the Southern Stat3s and New Zealand, but who has Avon appreciation in the United Kingdom, Avnere his color conceptions have been warmly praised. Among the oils now on view there are some productions of conspicuous merit. Standing out prominently are " Mount Cook from Lake Pukaki," "Evening of a Grey Day, Lake Te Anau," and " Milford Sound." They are characterised by beautiful color schemes and effective draughtmanship. The treatment of the light and shadow of mountain and water is that of a master hand. In the pastel work, which is characteristically soft and delightful in every way to those who enjoy art contemplation on "the nearer vision," may be specially mentioned " The Clinton River," and "The drop scene of the Wanganui River." Mr Perr'ett's collection is very varied, and will please art lovers. He comes from the now well-recognised Scottish school, and the dominant feautres of his work are the beauty of the color schemes and the treatment of evening and early morning effects. With the collections are sketches by Signor Nerli, the wellknown Florentine, a few studies by Australian artists, and a very interesting hoad in black arid white by Holloway, the engraver of the Raphael cartoons. Tlie original Bulletin presentment of Phil May is also to be noted.
