THIRTY SQUARE MILES
DEVASTATED
(Received May 14, 11.30 p.m.)
SYDNEY, May 14. Early on the morning of March 17 the inhabitants near Kagi were startled by several slight shocks, followed by a severe one and accompanied by subterranean explosions. The shock continued at intervals of five to ten minutes all day. They continued through the following day and abated on the 19th. They devastated an area of about thirty square miles. The surface of the ground was much cracked, in all directions, and water spurted up several feet. In some parts the land, subsided and lakes formed; in other places exuding mud formed hillocks.
