AUSTRALIA'S PROTEST.

EXPLANATION BY MR DEAKIN

(Received May 14, 11.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, May 14. Following is the text of Mr Deakin's cable in reference to-' the Natal question:—"Since the intervention of Ministers of the United Kingdom with the administration of the self-govern-ing colony of Natal would tend to establish—even with regard to the prerogative of pardon—a dangerous precedent, affecting all States within the Empire, I respectfully appeal for the reconsideration of the resolution which they are reported to have arrived at over the matter."

Mr Deakin says the reason why he withheld the telegram in the first instance from the public was that he was anxious that his action should not be used for party purposes in England.
