A deputation representing 10,000 artisans protested to Lord Selborne that the repatriation facilities allowed to the Chinese were likely to throw idle 7000 whites. They claimed tnat similar facilities should be extended to unemployed whites.

Lord Selborne said that the' Government did not wish to dislocate industry, but discontented, coolies miist be repatriated.
