The Picton firebell and Brigade were discussed at Friday's meeting of the Council, and it was resolved that notice be given to the Brigade that the Council's offer of 24s in the £ subsidy be withdrawn at the end of June. A new firebell weighing 300 pounds is to be ordered from Booth, McDonald •and Co. on condition that full allowance is made for the two bells which were cracked.

Miss Agnes Dawson,' of Roslyn, gained 139 marks for pianoforte playing at the Royal Academy examination, the highest marks by any candidate in the 1905 examination in New Zealand for any subject.

In Picton on Friday evening the Mayor (Dr Redman) referred to the insufficient police protection of the •town. Constable Thompson, he said, was a thoroughly good man, but he had to attend to the duties of Clerk of the Court, and could not possibly do all the work needed. He proposed that the Minister of Justice be written to on the subject, and the proposition was agreed to.

Four tenders for building the Domain Bridge were opened by the Mayor at the Council meeting on Friday evening in Picton. The tenderers wore A. F. Bush, £035 lls; J. McLean and Sons, Wellington, £510 (with £18 extra for galvanised iron fence); <L C. Jones, Wellington, £G47 9s; Donald McLean and Co., Wellington, £770 (fence not included). After some discussion on ways and means, and consideration of a slight mistake in the inclusion of a boat-shed with the bridge, in the Order in Council from the Marino Department it was resolved to accept Mr J. McLean's tender, conditionally.

A large and energetic committee has been formed to organise a popular concert in aid of tlie local Fire Brigade, the proceeds to assist the Brigade in purchasing a hydrant suitable for practice purposes in view of the forthcoming Fire Brigades contest to take place during the New Zealand Exhibition. The Pelorus Sounds Committee forwarded a recommendation to the Education Board this morning that after a certain date no salary should be paid to any. teacher whose pupils were exclusively his or her own brothers or sisters. The Chairman of the Board explained that the Board had already taken the same view, to,,obviate the custom of poor and irregular instruction being given within the family when better talent might be available. Of course, there were exceptions where good teaching was done by a member of tho family. Mr Chaytor thought each case should be dealt with separately on its own merits. A motion to this effect was carried.

As it has transpired that none of the towns in the North Island are lighted with the acetylene gas which the Borough Council contemplated using for Picton, it is not likely that the delegates chosen by the Council to inspect the working of the machinery will go to Wellington and other towns.

Mr Fulton, representing the New Zealand Gas Company, gave an exhibition of the gas lighting at the meeting of the Picton Borough Council on Friday evening. Three burners were fixed in front of the Mayor's chair aiid were sufficient to illuminate the whole room. The lighting and extinction of the gas was controlled by electric apparatus. Councillors were impressed by the brilliancy, utility, and cheapness of the new illuminant, and in all probability the town Avill shortly be invested with new lamps..

At the meeting of the Council of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Mr J. Raid moved in the direction of obtaining improved facilities for telephone communication between town and country. , The present hour of closing at the country bureaux is 5 o'clock, and his object was to secure an extension till 10 o'clock, or even midnight, if possible. Even if it were not practicable to establish a system under which the country could be rung up from the town, there might be a prospect of securing arrangements under which the country would be able to communicate with the' town, where the exchange is now open till midnight. Such a convenience would be of great value to country residents, especially in urgent cases of illness. It was resolved to address the Cnief Postmaster on the subject.
