ADDINGTON STOCK SALES.
[PRESa ASSOCIATION.]
CHRISTCHURCH, April 25. At the Addington live stock market to-day there were large entries of sheep and pigs, and fair yardings of oilier classes or stock, and a good attendance. Beef was firmer in consequence of a moderate supply. Fat lambs sold at about the previous week's rates, and store sheep were easier all round. Fat sheep sold well; pigs of all classes were dull of sale, as were store cattle.
Store Sheep—There was a full yarding of store sheep, and for the first time this season there was an apparent slackening off in the demand. Prices for all classes were weaker, and particularly for lambs and ewes. The range of prices was: Good two-tooth ewes 17,s to 19s 7d; othery 12s to 16s; young mixed ages 13s to 16s 6d; sound mouth 13s to 16s; failing mouth 9s to 12s; forward wethers 15s to 16s 4d; others lls 4d to 14s 6d ; forward lambs 11s to 12s 2d; others 7s 6d to 10s 6tl. Fat Lambs—Tho entry of fat lambs totalled 5192, and the quality Mas very irregular, a considerable proportion of the lots being badly finished. The market opened rather weaker, but improved later on, and for prime sorts prices closed firm at last week's level. Prime sorts made 16s to 17s 9d; extra 18s 3d to 18s 6d; others 14s to 15s 6d ; store condition 8s 3d to 13s 9d. Fat Sheep—There was a fairly large yarding of fat sheep, including some good lines of prime wethers. There was a good sale for wethers, and owing to the competition of export buyers there was some improvement in the better classes of ewes. Prices were as follows:—Prime wethers 20s to 22s 2d : others 16s 4d to 19s 6d; prime ewes 16s 6d to 18s 3d; medium to good 14s to 16s; aged 9s to 13s; extra merino wethers 17s; good lls to lls lOd; merino ewes 4s 6d to lls.
Fat Cattle-—The supply of beef comprised 168 head, a fair proportion being prime steers, while the heifers were mostly light. The sale bpenec with more keenness in the bidding, owing to the supply not being up to the average, and prices showed an advance. Steers made £6 7s 6d to £11; heifers £5 to £6 10s; and cows £4 to £7 10s, equal to 20s to 22s for prime, and 16s to 19s for inferior to good per lOOlbs.
There was a large yarding of veal calves, including some well-grown sorts, and prices ranged from 7s 6d to 60s.
Store and Dairy Cattle—There was a small mixed yarding of store cattle, and the business done was limited at low prices. Dairy cows sold at £4 to £8 ss, according to quality. Pigs-—There was a heavy yarding of pigs, principally stores and porkers. The sale was a dull one throughout, and prices all round were easier. Baconers mad© 30s to 40s, and heavyweights to 535, equal to 3sd per lb ; porkers SOs to 28s, equal to 4d per lb; large stores 20s to 275; medium 12s to 18s, and weaners 2s 6d to 6s.
