CHRISTCHURCH, March 15
An inquest was held this morning touching the death of Violet Muriel Owens, a single girl, 17 years old, who died suddenly after a medical operation for the after-effects of a miscarriage. There was nothing in the medical evidence to show any improper treatment and the jury returned a verdict that death was due to shock following the operation. HAMILTON, March 15. Mr Lang, ex : M.H.R,.,for Waikato, was the recipient .of ,a handsome framed address and a purse of 250 sovereigns at the Town Hall, Hamilton ),this morning.. A large gathering of friends .and supporters was present. Mr ,J. Fisher, Chairman of the Waipa County Council, presided, and made the presentation. Messrs Massey, Herries, Kirkbride, and Bollard, M's.H.R., addressed the meeting, bearing testimony to Mr Lang's worth as a member. The hope was freely expressed that he would again contest the seat at the next election: The proceedings were most enthusiastic.
WELLINGTON, March 15. The Council of the New Zealand Chess Association has decided that the next Congress is to be held at Christchurch during the Christmas and New Year holiday. With a view to holding more than the ordinary tournament, it was decided to suspend the rule requiring Congress competitors to have lived for six months in New Zealand.
TE AROHA; March 15. At the Ohinemuri licensing election one Moderate and four Temperance nominees were returned. A few returns have yet to come.
