SCRIM AND FIRES.
STATEMENT BY A BRIGADE SUPERINTENDENT.
In his address afc the annual fire brigades' dinner at Wellington Superintendent Hugo expressed the opinion that legislation or a by-law should be introduced to restrict the use of scrim and paper for covering walls in dwellings. While not altogether confined to New Zealand, scrim and paper were more in use here than in any place he hadjeome across. He would show that this material was bad if only from an economical point of view. There was a five recently in Willis Street, cauaed by a person, foolishly using a candle when oiling the tap of his gas meter. When the tap was taken out the gas took fire. The meter was between the studs, on which was scrim and paper, and about dS2OO damage was done. A week afterwards a woman in a house in Charlotte Street did precisely the same thing. The brigade had further to go to put out the fire, but the house was of lath and plaster, and the damage was about 15s. That was a pretty good illustration from £s cl point..of view,
