Mr T. Salmon, Postmaster at the Bluff, Southland, is at present in Blenheim, on holiday leave.
The friends of Mr Combes, C.E., will be pleased to hear that he is progressing favorably.
Sir John Hall has consented to be a candidate for the Christchurch Mayoralty.
Mr Justice Denniston will arrive in Blenheim by the Picton train this evening. '
Our Havelock correspondent states that at a meeting of the newly forme? d Harbor Board there to-day, Mr H. M. Reader was appointed Chairman.
Captain Edwin wires:—"Strong winds to gale from between north and west and south-west; glass,. fall; tides, good; sea, heavy on coast; rain, probable."
It is stated that coal measures exist in the Clarence Valley; and one report lias it that traces of gold have been discovered. The coal story lias a substantial foundation, but the report as to gold needs confirmation.
It transpires that ex-champion Ching had the ill-luck, just prior to the opening of the Trentham meeting, to have his match rifle destroyed by tire. He had thus to go through the meeting with a comparatively strange weapon.
The teachers of the Blenheim Borough Boys' and Girls' Schools have received communications from the Secretary of the Education Board asking them to "place themselves in the hands of the Board," with a view to the amalgamation of the schools as required under the new Act.
In the Badges contest amongst members of the Blenheim Bowling Club, the following game was played yesterday:—"Johnston, Gonlter, Jackman, and Reid (skip), 21, beat W. Bush, Griffiths, Mclver, and Broughton (skip) 10. Adams's team challenges the holders on Saturday.
A meeting of the Blenheim Retailers' Association was held on Monday night. The Secretary of the Hibernian Sports Committee wrote with regard to the closing of the shops at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the day on which tin. St. Patrick's Sports would be held. ft was resolved to adhere to the printeel list for closing on such holidays (12 o'clock), and the Secretary was requested to reply to that effect \ deputation from the St. George Society waited on the meeting practically on the same lines as the Hibernian Society, to close the shops at 11 a.m The secretary was instructed to reply as in the former case. The Secretary or the \Vairau Regatta wrote requesting the Association to close their shops on Easter Saturday, the day appointed lor holding the regatta, A long and animated discussion took place, and eventually it was agreed to defo'r the settling of same for a meeting to be held on Monday next.
