HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT
The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, March 10th : 7 - The market for mutton is hrmer, and there is a better demand. Stocks are light, especially light weights, which are getting very scarce. Iho average price of Canterbury mutton to-day is 4Jd per lb. North Island brands are quoted at 4jd. Ewes del per lb. The average price for Kiver Plate is 3Jd per lb. The lamb market is Aveak. lne stocks of Australian lamb are heavy, and are widely distributed amongst agents, who are pushing sales. mere is a large supply of second class quality on hand, which affects the market very seriously. The average price ot Canterbury lamb is 5W per lb. Brands other than Canterbury, sid. The beef market, is dull. River Plate supplies are heavy. The average prices of hindquarters is 3^d; torequarters (nominal), 2|d. The butter market is rather unsettled, on account of one large shipment arriving from Australia of very interior quality, for which some holders are forcing sales. There is a general and active demand for best quality only. The averge price of choice New Zealand butter is 105s; Australian, 101s; Argentine, 104s; Danish, 115s per cwt. ' The cheese market is firm, and there is a good demand for small whites at 625; colored, 64s per cwt. _ Hemp—The market is quiet, but holders are firm, especially tor spot lines. Stocks on hand are 542 tons, against 974 tons for the corresponding period of last year. The average price for g.f.a.q. Wellington, on spot, today, is . £33 per ton. The average price of "fair" current Manila on spot to-day is £41 10s. The cocksfoot seed market is very firm. The average price for bright dressed. 171b seed on spot-to-day is 57s per cwt. The wool market looks very strong. There are numbers of buyers at highest rates ruling. The importation of River Plate mutton, lamb and butter into the United Kingdom for the month of February, 1906, totalled 146,719 carcases mutton, 7681 carcases lamb, and 8622 cwt of butter, distributed as follows: — Mutton—London 40,861, Liverpool 79,589, Cardiff 16,369, Glasgow 6700, Cork, 3200. Lamb—London 180, Liverpool 6270, Cardiff 1231. Butter—B622 cwt to Liverpool and Southampton.
