THE RAND CHINESE
A LOW DEATH-RATE
(Received March 9, 8.32 a.m.) LONDON, March 8. Mr Churchill, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, stated that the deathrate of the Chinese coolies on the Rand last year was 18.386 per thousand. That of the African laborers was 47.13.
PARIS, March 7. The French shareholders in the South African mines are greatly concerned at the Chinese labor agitation. They express surprise, .through? the rie^spiipfers; that the JJritish .electors seriously believed there was anything approaching slavery.
