The debate in the. Chamber 'was heated. It arose out of » gendarme shooting a butcher who resisted the taking of an inventory in a church at Boaschepe. Several deputies protested that the. Separation Act was producing tumults, bot pacification. M. Brian, reporting on the" Sep.&r.a,tion Act, denounced the provocative tactics of the clergy, and declared that the opposition to inventories was political and not religious. M. Rouvier said that the Government was unable to stop inventories,, but would enforce the law with prudence and tact. He accepted a resolution approving the Government's statements in the matter. This was rejected by 267 votes to 234,.the,entire right half, consisting of Progressive Republicans, most of the Socialists, and some Radicals, voting against j the Government. i

M. Rouvier thereupon resigned
