[press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 2. The weather is fine but windy for the Melbourne-Canterbury match, and the attendance is small. The wicket is in good order. Orchard won the toss and elected to bat, Ollivier and Patrick opening Canterbury's innings to the bowling of McLeod and Armstrong. Both batsmen opened cautiously, but with the score at 8 Armstrong clean bowled Ollivier—B—l—3. Sims followed, and 30 showed for 20 minutes' play, Patrick batting freely and claiming 20. With the score at 42 Sims hit McLeod to Aitken at point—42—2—ls. Orchard succeeded, but after scoring 4 he was bowled by Armstrong—4B—3— 4. At 50 Lawrence was easily caught by Henty off Armstrong—so—4—l. At 2.45 the score was 55 for 4.
