GERMAN SHIPPING COMPETITION.
THE PROPOSED BRITISH COM-
BINATION
• Owing to the keen competition of the Norddeutscher Lloyd and the German Australian Steamship Company in the Australian trade, steps are being taken (says the Sydney "Morning Herald' ) with a view to the formation of a strong combination of British steamship companies. Some time ago a rumor was persistently circulated to the- effect that the Aberdeen line, belonging to Messrs George Tlftmipson and Co., and the Blue Anchor line, the property of Mr Lund, wore to be absorbed by the Atlantic Shipping Trust, but according to advices received at Sydney, Mr Bruce Ism'ay, president of the International Mercantile Marine Company, has authorised an official contradiction of the report. iv Liverpool shipping circles, however, it is stated that developments are ponding, and that the reported absorption has probably arisen from negotiations said to be on foot for a close and friendly working between the Aberdeen, Blue Anchor, and .White St"ar lines, which have regular services to Australia. To meet the keen competition in the Australian trade with tho North Gorman Lloyd, harmonious working is necessary dino'ug tho British lines. The White Star fleet running to Australia and New Zealand was specially built for the trade, the steamers being of the most modern type of 12,000 tons, fitted for passengers and cargo. The White' Star service between London and New Zealand flies tho flag of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, Limited. If further vessels arc wanted for this trade by the White Star line, they have no need to buy from outside, as a number of suitable steamers belonging to other sections of the combine are at present lying up. It is believed that m the near future an announcement will bo made of a new White Star service in the Pacific trade..
