IMPERIAL POLITICS.
LORD ROSEBERY'S ATTITUDE
NEWSPAPER COMMENTS
[press association.] (Received Nov. 27, 10.14 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 27. Lord Rosebery having declared that he would not serve under the Home Rule banner, the "Daily Telegraph" says that his attitude renders it imperative that Mr Balfour should resign in order to compel the Opposition to define its Irish policy. The "Times" says that Mr Asquith, Sir Edward Grey, Mr Haldane, and other Imperialist Liberals ought to indicate whether they are willing to fight under the banner that Lord Rosebery repudiates. The "Daily Chronicle" says that his Stirling speech did not indicate whether Sir Henry CampbellBannerman regards Home Rule as a paramount issue at the elections or the primal duty of the new Government. Any attempt to pass Home Rule in the next Parliament would be a flagrant breach of faith with the nation.
The "Daily News" says it is relieved at Lord Rosebery's announced divergence. His presence in a progressive administration would have proved less its strength than its weakness.
