RESTRICTION OF ASIATICS.
WESTRALIAN LEGISLATION VETOED. A PEREMPTORY DESPATCH. [PKESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received Nov. 6, 9.40 a.m.) PERTH, Nov. 6. It is understood the Premier has received a despatch from the Colonial Office intimating that the clause in the amending Factories Act relating to Asiatics is repugnant to the feelings of countries with which Britain is at peace, and must be repealed. The despatch is peremptory. In a recent decision Mr Justice Parker characterised the Act as an extraordinary piece of legislation, and said he wondered that the Imperial authorities had not objected. Although apparently based upon the Queensland and New Zealand Acts, the stringent clause in question is of local construction.
