RUDGE-WHITWORTH ROAD RACE.

A SUCCESSFUL EVENT, This event, occurring under th* most favorable auspices 5 attracted a large field of riders; and a considerable crowd of spectators witnessed the start and finish. The northerly breeze and light atmosphere of yesterday, afternoon, together with a perfect road, ensured a good race and a fast time; and Wells's record would probably nave been shorter had it not been for the fact that the road, in several places, had been;littered with broken bottles, scrub, and other debris, with the evident intention on the part of some heinous spoilers of sport to either mar the race or break someone's neck. Such conduct in a community which professes a love of sport is incomprehensible,- indeed. As it was, of the thirteen competitors who left the starting point only five finished, one rider (Stewart) getting a glass puncture only a quarter of a mile from home. The prizes were as follow: —First, gold medal (value £3 10), presented by E. Reynolds and Co.; second, set of Al clincher tyres (value £2 10s); third, acetylene lamp (value 15s). For the fastest time, a prize of £2 or value was also given. The race was arranged and managed by Mr Best; Mr C. J. W. Griffiths acted as judge; Mr C. P. Nash, timekeeper and starter; and Mr A. -, ; R. Thomson handicapper. The result was as follows:—
