Mr R, P. Greville, of the Lands and Survey Department, Palmerston North, has been selected to fill an important position in the Geological Department under Dr Bell, the Director of Geological Survey.
The Malay Mail states that Mr Algernon Combes (son of Mr E. Combes, surveyor, of Blenheim), who has so ably conducted all railway surveys for the last four years, will shortly pro ceed to Perak and Province Wellesley, in connection with the trace for the new railway, which after starting from Bukit Mertajain, will in all probability pass through Kulim in Kedah, and through Upper Perak, and across Ivelantau to the Kiwala Kelantan.
Mr John M'lnnes, a colonist of some fifty years' residence in New Zealand, died at Kaikoura on Monday last. The Star says that deceased was 82 years of age, and was a wonderfully vigorous man, folowing his avocation with his wonted energy up to the end of last week. For many years he had taken an active part in public affairs, and at the time of his death represented the Peninsula riding in the County Council. He was a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church. The deceased gentleman leaves a large family of sons and daughters, most of whom are married, and many grandchildren.
I The Waikato Times of a recent date has the following:—At the Hamilton Borough Council meeting recently, the Mayor, on behalf of the City Engi- ■ neer's staff at Wellington, handed over to Mr Sims, the new Town Clerk, a Swan fountain pen and a planimeter, the latter in a plush-lined sil-ver-mounted case, bearing the inscription, "Presented to S. B. .Sims-,Esq., from the City Engineer's staff, Town Hall, Wellington, as a token of esteem. July 31st, 1905." To Mrs Sims the staff presented a silver-moun-ted purse. The Mayor, referred to the high esteem in which the Town Clerk was evidently held by his colleagues at Wellington. He considered the Council fortunate in obtaining the services of Mr Sims. Mr Sims, though evidently taken by surprise, appropriately thanked the Mayor and acknowledged the kindness of his ex-col leagues.
