MR BARNICOAT'S DEATH.
The late Mr Barnicoat, M.L.C. of Nelson, was one of the oldest and most respected settlers in that old-established province, having come to the colony in 1843 in the ship Anckland, fellow passengers being Messrs Sclandero and Fell, both founders of well, known Nelson families Mr Barnicoat was present at the factions Wairau Massacre but, fortunately, escaped scatheless. He was a valued member of the Nelson Provincial Council for many years, and in the eighties was appointed a member of the Legislative Council. In the Council he spoke very rarely, and then never at any length; but he was possessed of a shrewdness and sagacity which made itself felt, and he was noted for the time and attention he paid to committee work. He was very pronounced in his views and was not in the least afraid of taking what for a time was an unpopular view of any subject. Two of his sons are still living, one being a well-known barrister in practice in Wanganni. A daughter of his, Miss Constance Barnicoat, acts as private secretary to Mr Stead, the famous English journalist, and has done some excellent literary work in various directions. /
