COLLISION ON A RAILWAY.
SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES.
Press Association* Electric Telegraph, Copyright,
Timabu, May 3. As the train from Ashburton was entering the station at 7 o'clock last night it left the main line, and, running into the dock, the engine collided with, a stop-post. The impact was not great, as the driver reversed the engine, and almost brought the train to a standstill before the collision. Three trucks and the next engine were derailed, and these and the engine were slightly damaged. The passengers were unhurt.
The yard foreman and shunter state that they left everything in perfect order, the dock Hue being locked by the shunter. It is, therefore, supposed that the accident was caused deliberately by some person unlocking the line and opening the point?. The lever at these points is weighted and worked automatically, so that it must have been fixed down to keep the points open while the train passed over; and a wooden wedge suitable for this purpose was found close by. The night was dark, and no ona was seen about. The matter is being investi* gated.
