The Mana left here to-night with launching gear, and will tomorrow morning endeavor to re float the Kapiti, now aground at Patea. Arthur Grogan, at present serving a sentence for horse stealing:, pleaded guilty to-day to another similar charge, and was committed for sentence. At the annual meeting of the Weilington Opera House Company held to-day the report showed a successful year, the mortgage having been considerably reduced, and over £300 spent on improvements. A dividend of 8 per cent, was declared, as against 7 per cent, last year. A bonus of one hundred guineas was voted to the directors. Dannevibke, April 22. A large meeting of ratepayers last night agreed to a proposal to take a poll of ratepayers for a loan of £20,000 for a sewerage system and improvement of waterworks. Thames, April 22. The Government has purchased a block of private lands in the goldfields area, thus placing additional facilities before the miners, who will be enabled to follow their occupation on payment of smaller fees. ; MrAyson, Chief Inspector of Fishe- | ries, is inquiring into the flshing industry, which is making rapid strides. He is holding a conference of fishermen as to conditions and regulations under which the industry is carried on. Technical classes have been sneeessfully established under the Auckland Board of Education.
