A CASE IN COURT.

The charge against F. Cross and Son, a Christohureh firm of spirit merchants, for soliciting orders of whisky at Ashburton, a prohibited district, was heard before Mr Haaelden, S.M., this morning. The alleged soliciting consisted of an advertisement in the Ashburton Guardian that whisky could be supplied to residents in Ashburton, country orders promptly attended to.
Mr G. Harper, for the defence, submitted that soliciting under the Alcoholic Act meant personal canvass by a person in a prohibited district.
Mr T. W. Stringer, Crown prosecutor, contended the advertisement was a particular method of solicitation, for an advertisement contained in the local paper was addressed to local people. Judgment was reserved.
