SPEECH BY SIR EDWARD GREY.
Press Annotation. Electric Telegraph Copyright.
London, July 29.
Sir Edward Grey, who was a member of the last Liberal Ministry, speaking »t Maidstono, said he did not believe Mr Chamberlain's statement that the Empire would break up unless the present flscal system was abandoned. He would dread to see a bond of bargain replace the sentimental union. Britain would not benefit, continued Sir Edward, if the colonies raised their duties to foreigners, unless they lowered their duties to her.
The speaker trusted the nation's strong sense would not support Mr Chamberlain and Mr Balfour in a great political gamble.
