The Underwriters' Association received a telegram stating the steamer Niwaru, which struck a rock at Napier, was filling quickly. She had four feet of water in her hold, and to prevent her sinking was beached. ' The whole of the Wellington cargo, including Spring drapery from city houses, is reported to be seriously damaged. Centrifugal pumps and other appli- | ances go north by the Tarawera today. Some parsons who were in the vicinity of the breakwater when the Niwaru was-entering the harbour last cv niug state the steamer came dangerously close to the breakwater. Blue lights were burned by the harbourmaster and the steamer veered off, being subsequently boarded by the pilot. Owing to the rapid rate in which the water rose in number four hold it was deemed advisable to take the steamer close in to shore near the breakwater, and here she took the ground. There is now forty feet of water in the hold.
