SLY GROG SELLING.

As the result of a raid by the police on an tillered sly grog shop in tho Tairua district, thirty miles Irom Thames, two men were charged with selling liquor without a license. Evidence was given that the sale was witnessed by the police, who seized ten cases of beer and found a hundred dozen empty bottles. The defence was that the miners in the district sent orders for oases to Auckland and used this place as a depositing ground. When the police came they had not time to remove the cases to their proper destinations. The charge against one man was dismissed. Hayes was fined, including costs, £35. The major portion of the liquor was confiscated. Magistrate Bush said that in the case of the next offence no fine would be inflicted. Accused would be sent to gaol; Gbesmowh, July 20. At the C'inrt this morning A. Laurenson was convicted and fined £50 for sly grog selling. A number of licensing cases were heard, convictions bsing recorded in two instances, while another charge is now being heard.
