Napier, Jnly 20. The oldest shop in Hastings Streets, occupied by Newton & Co., grocery Kaiapoi Woollen Company, Bennett and Gnerie, tailors, and the London Dental Company was destroyed by fire last evening. The fire broke out jnst before midnight, but must have been burning for some time previously, as when the flames broke out the whole of the upper storey of the building was in a blaze* Practically nothing was saved of Newton and Co.'s, and the Kaiapoi Woollen Coy's stock, and very little from the others. The fire was for- • tunately confined to the building in which it started. Thames July 20. A fire occurred yesterdiy at the grocery establishment of William Scott, who lost heavily by fire about a year ago. The fire was discovered by a policeman, and it then had a good hold, with dense smoke in every portion of the building. The fire brigade did splendid work and soon had the fire under control, but the whole of the interior of the shop and contents were gutted. A large amount of damage was done to the stock, which was insured for £1250, seven hundred and fifty in the United, and five hundred in the Vie* toria. The building, which was the property of the Hon, Mr McGowan, was insured for six hundred in the North British. Auckland, July 20. The Harp of Erin Hotel, Great South road, was destroyed by fire last nigbt. The hotel was owned by Hancock and Co., and oooupied by Mrs Lennard. The insurances are:—House, £800 in the Imp ß rial and £500 in the New Zealand; stock and furniture of the hotel, £690 in South British; Mrs Lennard s private furniture, £310 in the Standard. Nothing was saved, the hotel being burnt to the ground. New Plymouth, July 20. A six-roomed house on the Ngariki road, Eahotn, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday night. It was owned by Mr Billing and occupied by the schoolmaster.
