At the arboricultural sale on Saturday afternoon a considerable number of shrubs and trees were pdrchased by Mr S. M. Neville, who is a member of the Wairau Hospital, Btard's TreePlanting Committee. \ \ The half-yearly clearing sale of drapery has commenced at Mr H. V. Browne's establishment,; and the public are advised jthafc the goods are being quitted on such lines as will ensure a complete clearance for the stocking of the new Spring consignments. .iTho! Petitions Committee of the House has recommended to the Government for. favourable consideration the'petition ' of Mrs Katherine Allen, who asks for a compassionate allowance owing to the death of her husband, who was in"the Government:service*, The Garrison Band rendered a programme in Market Place on Saturday night, and their performance v gave pleasure to a large number of people. " c ' '*'■ At a meeting of motor cyclists, convened by the Christchureh Cycling Club, it was decided that a motorcycle branch be formed in connection with the club, members to have separate representation on tho club's executive. Rutnerfbrd, M.H.R.i with regard to improvements at Hanmor Springs, Sir Jeseph Ward said,thattheGovernment' is not at present prepare 1 to establish a motor service, between Culyerden and Hanmer, nor woiild^ it enter into competition with a private motor service, provided such; iwas;', satisfactory to travellers as regards timetable and fares. " ' ' : Reference was made at the meeting of the Blenheim branch of the Farmers' Union on Saturday to, the forthcoming conference to be Veld at Pictbn for the consideration of Marlborougti's railway and shipping interests. - Mr' R; Bell said that the Union had already taken aotien with a view to obtaining better communication with Wellington and the-itnprovement and cheapening of the carriage of produce to the outside markets.. Ho noticed thab delegates of local bodies were to meet"at Picton to discuss wharf and railway facilities, and also the improvement of the river;' and he thought the Union would be doing good service by co-operating. In further remarks, he said that, for his own part t he thought tbat the river connection should be developed as being a means of getting their produce to Wellington, or oven the West Coast, at cheaper rates' than via 'Picton. "It was remarked that the Union had not received an invitation to send a representative to the Picton conference. After discussion, It -was 'resolved, that the Union express its willingness to join with tb.e other local bodies in making representations as to the railway and shipping interests of Marlborough.
