AN OPERATION NECESSARY.
THE POPE WISHES TO DIE
STANDING.
Received July 12, 4.40 p.m. Rome, July 11.
Professors Mazzoni and Rossoni declare that a cure of the pleurisy is impossible, and that an operation is necessary. The present weakness of the Pontiff is a great obstacle to its performance.
Owing to the condition of the Pope, the visit of King Victor Emanuel to Paris is postponed till September.
The Pope is so active that he disregarded the injunction to remain in bed, and often walked with assistance to his arm' chair, where the doctors generally found him. They ordered him to return to bed.
Replying to the remonstrances of the doctors he said he wished to die standing.
The patient took beef tea and an egg last night. There is a prospect of the patient passing a quiet night.
