A great gatheviogof representatives of the Church and State welcomed Dr. Neligan, tho new Bishop of Auckland, last nighfc. Speeches were delivered by the Governor, the Mayor, and Bishop Neville, and addresses were presented from the diocese, from the Maoris, the V.M.C.A., and other denominations.
In the course of a striking address, the Bishop declared that he was not a party chuichman; ho believed there was room for both high and low churchmen, provided they were loyal churchmen and kept within limits of the prayer book. The Bishop's speech made a most favorable impression.
This morning the Bishop held his first ordination, when a Maori clergyman was admitted to the priesthood. On this occasion Dr. Neligan wore a splendid cape of white figured satiD, with border of clareb-colored plush, trimmed with gold.
