There was a great demonstration at the school this morning when the saluting of the flag took place, the Mayor, member for the district, and other citizens delivering patriotic addresses.
Auckland,. May 25. Empire Day was observed by public offices, banks and schools, but retail establishments generally traded as Public schools assembled and saluted the flag and then dispersed, This afternoon the Governor laid the foundation stone of the Veteran's Home at the pah, Onehunga. The movement was started by the Governor on the proclamation of peace in 1902, and between £7000 and £8000 stands to the credit of the fund. The buildinc will be a wooden structure covering about one-third of an acre, and the contract price is £4429•
In honor of Empire Day the District High School, pupi's fluted the flag, and patriotic speeches were delivered by the Mayor and others. Dunedin, May 20.
Empire Day is not observed as a holiday except by public offices. Most of the schools assembled for the purpose of saluting the flag. The Mayor and members of Parliament visited the various school?, aud patriotic addresses were delivered. At North-east Valley trooping the colors was effectively gone through by the cadets.
