VICTORIA COLLEGE.

The trouble that the Victoria College Council has been coping with for some months past in the way of provid ing for a course of civil engineering and surveying at the college seems to bo bow almost solved. At a recent meeting of the council a committee was appointed to confer with the technical education committee of the Education Board with a view to ai> ranging for the necessary instruction 1.0 be given, the colle^o and the Technical School working in conjunction. Mr Evaus reporttd to tho Colhgo Council that there would be no difficulty whatever in establishing the course desired. JLa order to carry the proposal into effect there were two courses open. One was for the council to recognise the teachers who wouid supply tho Technical School part of t^.e work as (etchers occupying a University status. Tho alternative was for the Technical School to be affiliated to the University of New Zcalxnd. Sir Robert Stoiifc ssid ho thought tiio Senate and the other colIfgc3 would oppose the latter proposal. The better way would be to recognise the lecturers who were to give the neeotsary instruction. It was not po^sitlo to affiliate a college to a university unless there was a sufficient staff to carry out degree work. It would not do to start two colleges to do university work in one town. The former proposal was approved. The chairman a-ked that bis remarks should bo considered as an interim report, and tlie committee could bring down a full report at the next meeting. Mean Mine a conference will be held with the Technical School Committee to farther discuss tho suggestions.
