Alleged Cure For Rattlesnake Bite.
Dr. W. J. Hoffman notices in Science the employment by a Pennsylvania "mountain doctor" of a plant claimed to possess virtua In crises of rattlesnake bite. This plant ia Saniculamarylandica, or saniele, termed by the aatives "master root," because it "masters j the. rattlesnake venom." The fresh plant and roots are pounded and soaked in boiling milk, when the mixture is applied to the wound as a poultice. A decoction o< the pame. plant is also taken internally. The decoction is said to he more efficacious If made with milk instead of water. Dr Hofftnan believes this to be the first in stance of "bringing this plant to public attention.at least as employed by the Pennsylvania Germans and for the purpose stated.
