New Plymouth, July 7.
William Bayly, an old settler, died last evening, aged G8 years. He came out with his parents in the Amelia Thompson, the second vessel bringing settlers to Tarauaki. He was several times Mayor of New Plymouth.
Invekcaugiiji, July 17. A serious fire occurred at Fortrose early thte morning, destroying Attwood's private boarding house, a bandsome two storey building, and Lewis's two-storey brick building. The insurances are not yet ascertain able.
Palmerston N m July 7. Eobert Gray, charged with wounding J. L. Anderson, by striking him on the eye with a glass, was committed for trial at the Wellington Supreme Court.
Dunedin, July 7. An application this morning made by Mr Thornton, solicitor, on behalf of five men accused of robbery with violence, that the press and the public in the interests of j jstice should be excluded, was not allowed by theS.M., Mr Graham.
Hokitika, July 7.
The steamer Jane Douglas was hauled off the beach last night and safely berthed at the wharf. She is still making a little water.
