Mr Carroll) and party left Immediately } *fter lanch for Picton, going away xdtboat any of the ceremonies which the Maoris were prepared to give. The resident native-* are very disappoints, and those interested in the laud fear that they will lose it. Nearly j all tfce children in Pic ton and numbers { of others went down yesterday to see tbe pot and bat a, bnt returned disappointed. The distinguished Maori vis-itors left by steamer for Wellington j last night. jj The Maoris say they would like to do I away with the name of Picton and | revert to the older and more poetical I one of Waitohi. Many white people [ are of the satcc opinion, and wonder why the name of Picton was ever bestowed on the port. j Photographers were greatly en cvii drvcr at Waikawa during the last week. | Cameras and kodaks were "taking" | ercrything and everybody. One eni tlio^iaj-t used do fewer than four dozen j plates, and in consequence feels well I pleased with himself.
