The wicket helped the bowlers, and the remainder of the Englishmen were dismissed in 45 miuutea, tho innings closing for 145. Duff and Trumper opened the second innings oi the Australians. Tho former was caught with the total at 20. Hill followed, and with Trumper began to lash out. There were frequent changes of bowling, but it was not until the score had reached 80 that Trumper was caught at the wickets. Darling was dismissed without scoring, and on Gregory's advent play became quieter. At lunch the score stood at 115 for three wickets. On resumingl, Hill continued to punish the bowling, hitting three fours off one of Hirst's overs. At 187 Gregory was run out, the result of a smart return by Fry. The partnership put on 107 runs in 65 minutes. Noble made only a short- stay, and was followed by Hopkins. Hill's time then came, Maclaren making a fine one-handed catch in the slips. The retiring batsman was at the wickets nearly 2J hours. Ho hit 16 fourers, and 6 for 25.

Armstrong and Hopkins, who played out time, carried the score to 260, both not out for 28and 10 respectively.
